So, the premise is that everyone is an expert at Something.  Sometimes we want to put a question out there to the Collective and see who can help us – give us information – problem-solve – brainstorm – just share experiences.  Fluther lets you put out a question and see what happens.  It also lets you answer questions and read answers.  Today questions varied from iPhone Apps, MAC OS X, piercing, raising chickens, and refinancing.  Some of the answers were funny, some serious, and obviously people are building relationships.  Check it out !

Making a Difference January 6, 2009

How do we make a difference?  Do we think that we can make a difference in such a huge world?  How can the Web help us reach out Globally?

I found this and think it is an amazing example of taking a talent / skill / passion and also taking advantage of the technology available for a global experience to try to make a Difference.  Not long ago we might have seen these pictures in a magazine but the addition of sound and “movement” makes it more powerful.  OK… so we might have watched it on a documentary but length and interest and sponsorship comes into play to get it produced.  This is out there, on the web, and can reach hundreds, thousands – who knows who it might inspire.  I hope this gives you a moment to pause and think about your passions and talents… how can you reach out and make a Difference?

Happiness Is? In the Moment? December 11, 2008

So I have been sick in bed for the past four days. It started out as either food poisoning or a stomach virus and I am not going into graphic detail because No One wants to read that. It has ended with a raging headache which I am hoping is on the mend thanks to some meds from the Doc.  Now, oddly enough, I could actually work in bed as long as I didn’t move around too much or start coughing.  (Any serious movement made rockets shoot out of my head)  Today, while going through email and reading miscellaneous tweets and such I stumbled across a funny website – Today’s Big Thing - which just features a new video each day, sometimes funny, sometimes music, whatever.  But what I found that I really wanted to share was Where The Hell is Matt?  I cannot describe how happy this site made me feel – I’ve shared it with almost everyone I know (except for the impossibly grumpy!  smile).  Why do I like this site?  It make me happy… it makes me smile… it makes me laugh and tear up.  It is Joyous and Beautiful and Fun.  And the people in it look like they are having fun and are truly Truly Enjoying the Moment.  That’s what we don’t do often enough – just take a breath and enjoy the moment that we are In.  So – Take a moment, check out the video and tell me you didn’t smile Once!  ENJOY!!!

New Facebook Application November 5, 2008

So why do you go onto Facebook?  I go on to catch up with friends, co-workers, and students.  I also go on because it is fun to see people’s pictures, to check out events, to look at Flair and other fun Facebook applications.  Yesterday at SocialDevCampEast (which I will talk about later), I met the creator of What U Wearin – a new application for Facebook.  What you get to do is put together outfits that you wear and let your Friends rate those outfits. How much fun is that?  Now – this is a beta version (meaning still in the design phase) and currently only 300+ people are signed up but I think that Stevenson University can be The Fashion University !  So – Let’s show ‘em what we wear!

Tweet The Vote – Make It Count November 2, 2008

On November 4th 2008, millions of Americans will go to over 200,000 distinct voting locations and using different systems and machinery to vote.  Some voters will have a terrific experiences, and others will experience the same problems we have been hearing about for years – long lines, broken machines, inaccurate voting rolls, and others will experience problems that we haven’t heard about before. That’s why a new citizen-driven election monitoring system called Twitter Vote Report (www.twittervotereport.com) was just launched. Using either Twitter.com, iPhone, direct SMS, or our telephone hotlines, voters will have a new way to share their experiences with one another and ensure that the media and watchdog groups are aware of any problems.

And YOU can help!  Be a citizen journalist!  Submit a report about conditions at your polling place.

Four ways to submit reports to Vote Report:

And if you would like to talk to a human to report bad conditions you’ve observed, please call our partner 1-866-OUR-VOTE.

As news outlets and blogs will report on Election Day stories, www.twittervotereport.com is an invaluable resource for thousands of voters to get immediate help. From questions like “where do I vote” or “how do I make sure that my rights are being upheld,” Twitter Voter Report augments these efforts by providing a new way for voters to send text messages (aka tweets) via cellphones or computers which will  be aggregated and mapped so that everyone can see the Nation’s voting problems in real-time.

Imagine a nationwide web map with pins identifying every zip code where Americans are waiting over 30 minutes to vote or indicating those election districts where the voting machines are not working. Collectively we will inform each other when the lines are too long and ensure that media and watchdog groups know where problems exist.

For more information, go to www.twittervotereport.com.  And please help to spread the word!

Why am I Blogging? August 15, 2008

So my work is Student Affairs and I love working with the students and the University and many facets of Higher Education but one of my passions is Web 2.0 and all that it has to offer.

Of course, people drop this phrase all over the place but what does it all mean? What is Web 2.0? But that sounds like it is just a place for business, what about education? Education 2.0 This doesn’t just mean that everyone is going to just go to college online though – there are so many other possibilities. How we communicate and share information, how we expand our views of others and the world.

So my goal with this Blog is to try to expand some perspectives and show a few snapshots of what’s going on out there. I hope that I can inspire some explorations and add some insights and, hopefully, expand where we at Stevenson University are going in the Web 2.0 World !
